Frigiliana
is reputed to be the finest white village in Andalucia, and is the holder
of several awards. This is no surprise when walking round the narrow
cobbled streets. Just seeing the array of colourful flowers against the
white canvas is truly beautiful. Although walking through the streets can
be taxing it does come with rewards, for around each corner is another
pleasant sight or an intriguing curiosity. Although buying souvenirs is
not a problem, many of the shops do have local products such as Frigiliana
honey (miel), olive oil or brightly coloured tiles and plaques. Another
pleasant pass time in this sleepy village is to take a coffee or glass of
wine and watch the world go by.
Situated
at the foothills of the Sierra del Tedaja Mountain Range, the village of
Frigiliana is only 6km to the busy town of Nerja. The views of the
Mediterranean Sea and Nerja are breathtaking; this pretty little Moorish
village is well worth a visit. In the center is the old church, once a
mosque for several centuries now faces a tranquil square where
refreshments can be enjoyed. This photo was taken from the Torrox/Frigiliana
Country road above the village, showing the spectacular views of the
pueblo and the Mediterranean sea.
Frigiliana’s
most significant historical event was the rebellion of the Moriscos (Muslins
forced to convert to Christianity) against
the Christian rulers of the area. Situated on street corners are plaques
telling the story of the violent uprising in 1569, and how the
battle of Frigiliana ended violently. The Moriscos from the village and
surrounding countryside fought to the death, fighting against a
professional army led by the governor of the garrison in Nerja. In the
final act of the battle, rather than be taken into captivity; the
surviving Morisco women threw themselves to their deaths from the hills
above the village.
