January
5th – The arrival of the Three Kings
It’s the Spanish Christmas Eve, where a procession of floats usually
leave Verano Azul Park behind Supersol supermarket at approximately 5.00pm,
however check with tourist
office as starting point can change. The kings make their way around the streets
throwing sweets to the children. Most
children and adults like dressing up and take part in the procession. |

February 2nd
2008
- Nerja Carnival
(This
event starts Saturday before Shrove Monday)
Street
parades, processions and entertainers, great atmosphere similar to the
carnival in Rio De Janeiro! Don’t miss this fantastic parade, you’ll find half the town
dressed in colourful costumes so a camera is recommended. The procession start about 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Balcon
de Europa in the centre of Nerja, you are not guaranteed good weather
so wrap up warm. There are also competitions for the best costumes in
each category, lots of fun to brighten up a winter day.

March 23rd 2008
- Easter
Easter
processions each day.
Religious icons held aloft and paraded through the streets on Friday
evening, then on Sunday at 12 noon don't miss the procession of fancy
dress which is full of colour.

May 3rd Day of the Crosses
Businesses and neighbours compete to display home made palm and
flower crosses and shrines outside their premises. Traditional foods
of Marcocha (popcorn with honey), Arropiá (caramel) are eaten.

15th San Isidro
A
spectacular procession of horses, carts and decorated vans.
Celebrating the patron saint of farmers, many of the locals
participate dressed in colourful traditional costume. The procession starts
from the centre of Nerja and makes its way to the village
of Maro, flanked all the way by locals and tourists alike joining in the
merriment. Eventually nearly the whole town ends up in Maro near the
caves where the partying continues for 2 or 3 days and nights, with
live bands, beer stalls and hot food stalls. If preferred the
pick-nick area offers space to have your own barbecue, fairground
stalls add to the party atmosphere.

June
23rd – 24th San Juan
The
night of San Juan takes place along the beaches of the Costa with bonfires erected and
tents to house the revelers, the biggest bonfire is usually on
Burriana beach in Nerja. Just before 12 midnight all the lights go
out, at the stroke of midnight fireworks light up the sky followed by
the starting of bonfires. Beach bars and restaurants stay open all
night often providing their own live entertainment, a night to
remember.

July
16th Virgen Del Carmen
"Dia de la Virgin Carmen" - the Virgin Carmen Saints day,
marine procession with the Statue of the virgin being carried in
fishing boats along the coast, followed by a fireworks display. |

September
7th – 9th Maro Feria
Fun
fair and celebrations through out the village
of Maro, day and night. Beer stalls and food bars abound. Many arranged
displays and song groups. |

October
9th – 12th Nerja Feria
A
funfair on a large scale! Day and night celebrations with fairground
attractions, beer tents, food bars etc. This event continues non-stop
for 3 days and nights. |

December 16th - Torrox
Village – Festival of “Migas”
On
the last Sunday before Christmas the village
of Torrox
celebrates an unusual tradition of “migas”, the main ingredient
is fried bread crumbs, other stalls offer different food if it's not
to your liking, situated throughout the village are barrels of local
wine, this is free along with the megas. There are
numerous beer stalls, and a market in the top car park. In the plaza
is live music and Flamenco dancing.
